René Libeer (born September 28, 1934 in Roubaix , France , † November 13, 2006 ) was a French flyweight boxer.

amateur

Libeer won the bronze medal in flyweight at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne . After victories over Hyun-Ki Pyo, North Korea , and Kenji Yonekura, Japan , he lost in the semifinals to the eventual Olympic champion Terry Spinks , Great Britain .

At the European Championships in Prague in 1957 , he was also third. In the semifinals he lost to the Romanian Mircea Dobrescu (4-1).

professional

In January 1958 he turned pro and lost his first fight. Almost two years later he became French flyweight champion and defended his title three times.

In July 1963 Libeer fought for the European flyweight title, but he was defeated by the Italian Salvatore Burruni on points. Two years later the title was vacant and Libeer won it by beating the Swiss Paul Chervet . He was able to defend the title three times until he lost to the Italian Fernando Atzori on points in January 1967 . The rematch in August ended in a draw. Libeer then withdrew from the boxing business.
