Mircea Dobrescu

Mircea Dobrescu (born September 5, 1930 in Buzău ; † August 6, 2015 ) was a Romanian boxer . Dobrescu was a silver medalist at the 1955 and 1957 European Championships and the 1956 Olympic Games .

Career

1952 started Dobrescu for the first time at the Olympic Games . After victories in flyweight (up to 51 kg) over Yoshitaro Nagata, Japan (2: 1), and Roland Johansson, Sweden (3: 0), he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against eventual Olympic champion Nathan Brooks , USA (2: 1) .

At the European Championships in 1953 Dobrescu was eliminated in the preliminary round against Edgar Basel , Germany (3-0). It went better, however, at the European Championships in 1955 , where he met Basel again in the final after beating Wolfgang Behrendt , GDR , in the semi-finals and lost again. In 1956 Dobrescu reached the final of the Olympic Games after victories over Federico Bonus, Philippines , Ray Perez, USA , and Johnny Caldwell , Ireland . In this he met Terry Spinks , Great Britain , to whom he was defeated on points.

1957 Dobrescu reached the final of the European Championships for the second time . After beating René Libeer , France (4: 1) in the semi-finals , he lost to Manfred Homberg , Germany (4: 1). In the same year he won the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow . At the European Championships in 1959 Dobrescu was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Vladimir Stolnikov, Soviet Union (3-2). The following year he won the Balkan Championships and took part in the Olympic Games for the third time . After victories over Jose Neves Martins, Brazil (5: 0), and Paul Chervet, Switzerland (KO 1.), he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Kiyoshi Tanabe , Japan (4: 1).

After Dobrescu was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Stolnikov at the European Championships in 1961 , he ended his career.
