India took part in the 1952 Summer Olympics in the Finnish capital Helsinki with 64 athletes, four women and 60 men, in 42 competitions in eleven sports.
It was the eighth time an Indian team had taken part in the Summer Olympics since 1900 . The youngest athlete was the athlete Nilima Ghose at 17 years and 37 days , and the oldest athlete at 40 years and 176 days was the water polo player Birendra Basak .

Hockey player Balbir Singh carried the flag of India during the opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium .
