Great Britain took part in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki with a delegation of 257 athletes (213 men and 44 women) in 127 competitions in 18 sports. The show jumping relay team achieved the only Olympic victory. Most of the medals (one silver and four bronze) were won in athletics. Another silver medal went to the sailor Charles Currey , bronze went to the team pursuit in cycling, the swimmer Elenor Gordon , the wrestler Kenneth Richmond and the hockey team. The standard bearer at the opening ceremony was the walker Harold Whitlock .
