Lawrence Robert "Laurie" Topp (born November 11, 1923 in St Pancras , † January 8, 2017 in Broadstone ) was an English football player .
career
Topp made his debut on January 29, 1944 in the war-related Hertfordshire & Middlesex League for Golders Green , the club took on the name Hendon FC two years later . Topp remained loyal to the club and amateur footballer throughout his career. In total, the outside runner completed 587 competitive games (16 goals) for Hendon FC by the end of his career in 1961.
When he won the FA Amateur Cup in 1960 at London's Wembley Stadium in front of 60,000 spectators, he scored the goal to equalize 1-1 against Kingstonian FC (final score 2: 1) three minutes before the end of the game , five years earlier he had the same place in the final In front of 100,000 spectators, they lost 2-0 against the most successful amateur club in the country, FC Bishop Auckland . He won the championship of the Athenian League with the club in 1953, 1956 and 1961, the Middlesex Senior Cup in 1956, 1958 and 1960. In addition, he won the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup a total of six times (1945, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1954, 1957).
Topp regularly represented the English amateur national team , for the first time in 1947 against Wales, a total of 33 appearances for the selection. In addition, he represented Great Britain at the Olympic football tournaments in Finland in 1952 (first round against Luxembourg) and in Melbourne in 1956 (quarter-final against Bulgaria), where he made three appearances and also scored a goal in the 9-0 first round win against Thailand in 1956.
Topp spent his professional life at Desoutter Brothers , a tool manufacturer that gave him enough free time to meet his footballing obligations and in return received tickets to important games from the club. The father of four died at the age of 93 after a long illness in a nursing home in Broadstone.
