Brian Robinson (born November 3, 1930 in Mirfield ) is a retired British cyclist . In 1958 he was the first Briton to win a stage of the Tour de France .

Athletic career

1952 started Brian Robinson at the Olympic Games in Helsinki ; in the individual road race he finished 27th and in the team competition eleventh place. He also became a British mountain champion.

Robinson then went professional , in 1954 he was second overall in the Tour of Britain . In the following years he belonged to the first generation of British road drivers who also successfully participated in road races on the " continent ". So he started seven times in the Tour de France ; his best placement was 14th place in 1956 , 1958 and 1959 he won one stage each. The 1959 Tour, however, was only able to bring Robinson to an end thanks to the help of his teammate Seamus Elliott : After his stage win, Robinson was so exhausted that he drove far behind the field and fell out of the time limit, only Elliott stayed with him. While Elliott then had to end the tour, Robinson was able to continue, as according to the rules no driver who was placed in the top ten like Robinson could be excluded for exceeding the limit. In 1957 Robinson was third at Milan – Sanremo and in 1961 he won the Critérium du Dauphiné . He started several times at the UCI World Championships in road driving for the British national team. He achieved his best result in 1960 at the race at the Sachsenring in the GDR with 10th place. In 1964 he ended his career.
