The United Kingdom participated in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London under the name of Great Britain with a delegation of 404 athletes (334 men and 69 women) in 139 competitions in 20 competitions.

The British athletes won 3 gold, 14 silver and 6 bronze medals. The host thus took twelfth place in the medal table . Olympic champion was the sailors David Bond and Stewart Morris in the swallow and the rowers Richard Burnell and Bertram Bushnell in the doubles twos and Ran Laurie and John Wilson in twos without helmsman. Four more medals were won by four of the 90 participants in the art competitions for Great Britain, but these are not included in the official medal table. The standard bearer at the opening ceremony was the fencer John Emrys Lloyd .
