Great Britain took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne with a delegation of 189 athletes (163 men and 26 women) in 108 competitions in 17 sports. Eight athletes, five men and three women, took partin the equestrian games that had been held in Stockholm five months earlier. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the wrestler George MacKenzie . The nation was most successful in athletics with seven and in boxing with five medals.
