Malaya took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia with a delegation of 32 athletes, 31 men and one woman, in 13 competitions in five sports.

It was the country's first participation in the Summer Olympics .

The youngest athlete was the swimmer Fong Seow Hor (19 years and 327 days), the oldest athlete was the hockey player Gian Singh (28 years and 313 days). The standard bearer was the weightlifter Bee Kim Tan .
