The equestrian games of the XVI. The Olympics took place in Stockholm, Sweden in 1956 . From June 10th to 17th, the six Olympic equestrian competitions were held in the Stockholm Olympic Stadium from 1912 .
background
Melbourne , Australia, won the bid for the 1956 Olympic Games at the 1949 IOC Congress . The question then arose as to how the equestrian competitions should be carried out. The Australian quarantine law provided for strict quarantine conditions, which would have meant a six-month quarantine for the horses.
While there were hopes in Europe that the quarantine regulations would be relaxed, another solution was devised in Australia: Australian horses should be prepared for the Olympic equestrian competitions and then drawn among the participants at the Olympic Games. It was not until 1953 that the decision was made not to change the quarantine regulations and the holding of the equestrian competitions was canceled.
In May 1954, the IOC finally re-awarded the equestrian competitions of 1956 separately from the other Olympic competitions, and Stockholm was awarded the contract. Other candidate cities were Paris ( France ), Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil ), Berlin ( Germany ), Los Angeles ( USA ) and Buenos Aires ( Argentina ).
Attendees
164 athletes from 29 countries took part in the equestrian games. 5 countries - Egypt, Cambodia, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Spain - boycotted the five months later games in Melbourne and did not take part in any other competitions.

dressage
The dressage program consisted exclusively of the Grand Prix de Dressage , which was held over June 15 and 16. There were 34 riders from 17 nations at the start.
The evaluations of two judges were highly controversial: Both the Swedish judge and the one from the Federal Republic of Germany put the riders from their home country on the first three places. The responsible international federations drew conclusions from this: The World Equestrian Federation FEI banned both judges. The IOC even considered removing dressage riders entirely from the future Olympic program. Ultimately, the sport remained Olympic, but as a consequence several measures were taken at the 1960 Games. So there were only two riders from each nation at the start, there was no team competition.

Show jumping
The show jumpers only had to compete in one test with two rounds in Stockholm, the result of which then counted for both the individual and the team decision. The course designer was Greger Lewenhaupt , who himself competed for Sweden at the Olympic Games in 1948. The jumping course comprised 14 obstacles with 17 jumps with a height of up to 1.60 meters. The obstacles also included many natural obstacles such as a reed fence and a park wall. In addition, a wall with a moat in front of it and two other moat obstacles had to be overcome.
The Italian and German riders dominated. At the penultimate obstacle of the first lap, Hans Günter Winkler pulled a muscle tear. In order not to let the German team burst, he also competed in the second round and did the famous ride on his “wonder mare” Halla . He rode to the gold medal under strong medication, supposedly without control over the horse that carried him flawlessly across the course of its own accord. Winkler himself later cleared up this rumor; he always had control over his horse, albeit with great pain.

Military (versatility)
56 riders from 19 nations took part in the Stockholm Military, 36 of them finished the test. The test consisted of four days: The dress judgment test on June 11th and 12th, the cross-country ride on the following day and the jumping as the last partial test on June 14th.
The military cross-country ride covers a distance of 34.850 kilometers, divided into five phases. In race track phase B, 3.6 kilometers with 12 obstacles had to be mastered in six minutes. Phases A, C and E were routes to be mastered.
50,000 spectators came to Cross Country (Phase D). It covered 7.650 kilometers, on which 33 obstacles had to be overcome within 17 minutes. Difficulties here were short approach distances and poor ground conditions after heavy rain. A Trakehner ditch proved to be a particularly problematic obstacle: Obstacle number 22 consisted of a 2.50 meter deep ditch with a one meter high rick (an obstacle made of solid tree trunks). Due to the boggy ground, the horses could not find a hold when jumping in and out. The horse of the Swedish rider Johan Asker, Iller , fell here and slipped under the obstacle, it was shot on the spot. A removal during the ongoing test was not possible, the following starters had to jump over the dead horse. In total there were 12 falls and 28 refusals only at this obstacle.
After the dressage, Otto Rothe and Sissi were in the lead with 98.40 minus points, and on the racetrack his result of 23.33 plus points was one of the better. In the cross country he got 72.97 minus points. Supplemented by 10 minus points from jumping, he came in 15th place. Frank Weldon was able to keep his third place out of dressage, but a cross country result of 5.34 plus points was not good enough for silver or gold. Petrus Kastenmann and August Lütke-Westhues owed their gold and silver medals to very good racing track and cross-country results. Of the 18 participating teams, eight brought a team result to the finish line, out of three teams not a single rider finished the test.
