Italy took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne with a delegation of 129 athletes (114 men and 15 women) in 76 competitions in 13 sports. As four years before, the nation was most successful in cycling and fencing. The sword and foil fencer Edoardo Mangiarotti , who also served as the standard bearer at the opening ceremony, won three medals.

Italy also took part in the equestrian games in Stockholm , where six male riders competed.
