Bulgaria took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, and the equestrian games in the Swedish capital Stockholm with a delegation of 48 athletes, 45 men and three women, in 31 competitions in seven sports.

Since 1896 it was Bulgaria's sixth participation in the Summer Olympic Games .

The youngest athlete was the basketball player Viktor Radew at the age of 20 years and four days , the oldest athlete was the rider Eloy de Menezes (58 years and 41 days).

Flag bearer

Basketball player Georgi Panov carried the flag of Bulgaria during the opening ceremony in Melbourne's Olympic Stadium .

Medals

With a recovered gold, three silver and one bronze medal the Bulgarian team was ranked 19 in the medal count .
