Boris Nikolov

Boris Georgiev (Mocha) Nikolow ( Bulgarian Борис Георгиев Николов ; born March  10, 1929 in Dobrich ; † January 29, 2017 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian boxer . Nikolov was a bronze medalist at the 1952 Olympics .

Career

Nikolov was Bulgarian champion from 1950–1957.

Nikolow first took part in the European Championships in 1953 , but retired in the light middleweight division (-71 kg) starting in the first fight against Len Mullen, Scotland (3-0).

In 1952 Nikolow won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in the middleweight division (-75 kg). After victories over Alfred Stürmer, Luxembourg (3: 0), Terry Gooding, United Kingdom (2: 1), and Dieter Wemhöner , Germany , he lost in the semi-finals to Vasile Tiță , Romania (3: 0). Nikolov was the first Bulgarian to ever win an Olympic medal.

In 1955 Nikolov took part in the boxing tournament as part of the World Festival of Youth and Students and won a bronze medal.

Nikolov took part in the following years in the European Championships in 1955 and 1957 and the Olympic Games in 1956 , where he started in the light middleweight division, but was eliminated early.

In 1996 Nikolov became an honorary citizen of the city of Dobrich. In 2004 he was torchbearer of the 2004 Olympic Games and in 2010 he was awarded the “Stara Planina” medal .
