Antonius Hurkmans
Antonius Lambertus Maria Hurkmans , usually Antoon Hurkmans , (born August 3, 1944 in Someren ) is a Dutch clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch . After his retirement he lives in Rome .
Life
Antoon Hurkmans comes from a farming family and had eight siblings. He was initially a greengrocer and owned his own grocery stores. He entered the late-career seminar in Warnsveld . After his pre-academic training in Gemert and in the Premonstratensian Abbey in Grimbergen , Belgium , he studied Catholic theology at the theological faculty in Tilburg from 1972 . In 1978 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD . Hurkmans received on 22 December in 1979 by Bishop Johannes Bluyssen in the St. John's Cathedral in 's-Hertogenbosch , the ordination .
Hurkmans was initially a pastor in Waalwijk . In 1987, Bishop Johannes ter Schure SDB appointed him rector of the newly founded priest training center Sint-Janscentrum in 's-Hertogenbosch. A year later he was appointed vicar general and provost of the cathedral . In 1994 he was by Pope John Paul II. To Monsignor charged.
Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch on June 13, 1998. The former bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch, Johannes Gerardus ter Schure, donated him episcopal ordination on August 29, 1998 ; Co- consecrators were Johannes Willem Maria Bluijssen , Bishop Emeritus of 's-Hertogenbosch, Joseph Frans Lescrauwaet MSC , Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus in Haarlem , Martinus Petrus Maria Muskens , Bishop of Breda , and Franciscus Jozef Maria Wiertz , Bishop of Roermond . Hurkmans chose the motto In virtute Spiritus Sancti ("In the power of the Holy Spirit") as his motto .
On March 5, 2016, Pope Francis accepted Hurkmans' early resignation for health reasons as he suffered from sleep apnea . He did not return to his hometown Someren afterwards, but went to Rome and was appointed rector of the Friesian Church of St. Michael and Magnus , the traditional national church of the Dutch in the Vatican , on the proposal of the Dutch Bishops' Conference .
Antonius Hurkmans has been Grand Prior of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem since 2003 . Since 2016 he has been a member of the Brotherhood of Santa Maria dell'Anima in Rome.
