Gemert is part of the municipality of Gemert-Bakel in the south of the Netherlands in the province of Noord-Brabant with a total of 16,590 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2018).
history
From the 13th century to 1807 the village, which looked like a small town, was owned by the Teutonic Knight Order . Since then it has been part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 1849, Gemert was the scene of a weaver revolt. The Teutonic Order won a power struggle over Gemert in 1366. The Duke of Brabant recognized their claims to the place that year. Around 1400 the Teutonic Knights had a new castle built in Gemert, and in 1587 a Latin school .
It is remarkable that, unlike in the surrounding area, there was extensive religious freedom in Gemert after the Reformation .
