The Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam (until January 1, 2009: Diocese of Haarlem ; Latin Dioecesis Harlemensis-Amstelodamensis , Dutch Bisdom Haarlem-Amsterdam ) is one of the seven Roman Catholic dioceses of the Dutch ecclesiastical province .
history
First foundation
In 1559 Pope Paul IV established five new bishoprics in the Netherlands on the occasion of the elevation of the diocese of Utrecht to an archdiocese , including the diocese of Haarlem as a suffragan . This happened at the suggestion of Philip II. This diocese was not granted a long life: In 1578 Haarlem fell into the hands of the Calvinists and Bishop Godfried van Mierlo had to flee the city. Until then, only two bishops had seen it:
- Nicolaas van Nieuwland (1562–1569)
- Godfried van Mierlo (1571–1587)
Start-up
In 1833 an Apostolic Administration was established in Haarlem with the Ordinarius Cornelis Ludovicus van Wijckersloot van Schalkwijk (1786-1851). The diocese of Haarlem was re-established on March 5, 1853. The first bishop was Franciscus Josefus van Vree.
With the formation of the Diocese of Rotterdam on July 16, 1955, the Diocese of Haarlem lost part of its territory and its believers. The diocese has been called Haarlem-Amsterdam since 2008.
