Nicolaas van Nieuwland (born June 9, 1510 in Egmond , † June 15, 1580 in Maartensdijk near Utrecht ) was a Dutch Roman Catholic bishop and the first bishop of Haarlem after the founding of this diocese in 1559.

Life

Nothing is known about his youth. Since he had a PhD in theology, he must have studied at a university of the time, most likely that of Leuven . In the consistory on July 6, 1541 he was appointed titular bishop of Hebron appointed and received on 11 September 1542 by the Bishop of Utrecht Georg von Egmond , the episcopal ordination . As a result, he took on the duties of auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Utrecht. In 1545 he was also canon of Utrecht and in 1556 dean of the chapter.

When new bishoprics were established in the Netherlands in 1559, van Nieuwland was proposed by the king for the bishopric of Haarlem. However, it was another two years before the official appointment by Pope Pius IV took place. On November 6, 1561, Nicolaas van Nieuwland was finally able to take possession of his bishopric and moved into Haarlem on February 1, 1562 with great pomp. However, van Nieuwland was considered an alcoholic by many of his contemporaries , and is said to have participated in processions several times while drunk. So the resignation was suggested to him, which he finally announced in 1569. He retired to Utrecht, where he died in 1580. His successor as Bishop of Haarlem was Godfried van Mierlo .
