George of Egmond

Georg von Egmond (from left: Joris van Egmond ) (* around 1504 - † September 26, 1559 ) was Bishop of Utrecht from 1534 to 1559 .

Life

He came from the family of Egmond . The father was Johann III. from Egmond .

He entered the clergy and in 1526 became Canon of St. Lambert in Liège . In 1534 he became dean of the Liège cathedral chapter. He held this position until 1543. Charles V appointed him abbot of the Abbey of Saint-Amand near Tournai in 1526 .

In 1534 he became bishop of Utrecht at the instigation of the emperor. The papal confirmation took place in 1535. He did not have any notable political power of his own, since the bishopric of Utrecht had passed into the Dutch sphere of influence of Charles V in 1528 . He was pious and tried to reform the church. He also promoted science and the arts. The poet Janus Secundus was his secretary. Gerard Morinck dedicated a book to him.

After his death he was buried in Saint-Amand Abbey. In the cathedral of Utrecht there is a cenotaph in his memory .
