Johann III. von Egmond (born April 3, 1438 in Hattem ; † August 21, 1516 in Egmond ) (also: Manke Jan ) Lord of Baer, Lathum , Hoogwoude and Aarstwoude , and Lord of Purmerend , Purmerland and Ilpendam was governor of Holland , Zeeland and West Friesland and first Count of Egmond. He was ancestor of the older line of the House of Egmond .

He was the eldest son of Wilhelm von Egmond (1412–1483) and his wife Walburg von Moers.

Life

Like his father, he supported the Burgundian Party in the struggle for power in Geldern . When Charles the Bold took power there in 1472/73, he made him Vogt of West Friesland and in 1474 Governor of Arnhem . During the so-called hook-and-cod war , he stood on the side of Maximilian I , who rewarded him in 1483 with governorship over Holland, Zealand and West Friesland. In 1486 the country became an imperial county . in February 1489 he led the siege of Rotterdam together with Martin von Pohlheim. The city had to surrender on June 26th.

In 1491 he became a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece .

His governorship in West Friesland was threatened by an uprising in 1491, which he was able to put down for the time being with the help of Albrecht , governor of Friesland.

In 1484 he married Magdalena von Werdenberg (1464–1538) daughter of Count Georg von Werdenberg and cousin of Emperor Maximilian . The couple had the following children:
