Wilhelm II of Egmond (born January 26, 1412 - † January 19, 1483 in Grave ) from the House of Egmond was Lord of Egmond, IJsselstein , Leerdam , Schoonderwoerd and Haastrecht and governor of Gelderland .

Life

Between 1458 and 1464 he toured the Holy Land with his older brother Arnold von Egmond , Duke of Geldern . In the following years he supported Arnold in the succession dispute against his son Adolf von Egmond . When, after Arnold's death and his conquest of Geldern, Charles the Bold became Duke of Geldern in 1473, he appointed him governor of Gelderland . In 1477 Mary of Burgundy accepted him into the Great Council of Mechelen . In 1478 he became a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece .

family

He was the son of Jan II of Egmond and Maria van Arkel. His older brother was Arnold von Egmond.

On January 22, 1437, he married Walburga von Moers († 1459), daughter of Count Friedrich von Moers and Engelberta von Kleve. From this marriage there were four daughters and three sons:

  • Johann III. by Egmond (1438-1516).
  • Friedrich von Egmond, Count of Buren .
  • Wilhelm von Egmond the Elder J., governor of Gelderland .
  • Anna von Egmond (1440–1462), married on August 14, 1459 Bernard van Bentheim (1435–1476), Count of Bentheim .
  • Elisabeth († 1539), married to Giisbrecht van Bronckhorst (1440–1489).
  • Walburga von Egmond, nun.
  • Margeretha, married to Jan van Merode.

In addition, Wilhelm had four illegitimate children:

  • Nicolas of Egmond.
  • Hendrik von Egmond († before 1511).
  • Frederik of Egmond.
  • Hendrika von Egmond, married to Willem van Tuyl van Bulckesteijn († 1449).
