Maximilien de Hénin-Liétard

Maximilien de Hénin-Liétard (* 1542 ; † December 21, 1578 in Antwerp ), Count of Boussu and Lord of Beuvry .

Life

Maximilien was a son of Jean V. de Hénin from a hennegauischen noble family from the house Hénin and Anne of Burgundy, daughter of Adolf of Burgundy .

After the death of his uncle Maximilian of Burgundy in 1558, he inherited his property, but he had to sell them because of debts.

Maximilien was appointed governor of Holland , Zeeland and Utrecht on June 17, 1567 by King Philip II of Spain . He took over the office of William I of Orange-Nassau who had requested his dismissal upon the arrival of Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba .

He was defeated and captured by the Geusen on October 11, 1573 at the Battle of the Zuiderzee . He remained in captivity until the Ghent pacification and then entered the service of William I of Orange-Nassau.

In September 1577 he was appointed governor of Gelderland by the States General . After his death in 1578 he was buried in the family burial chapel in Boussu .

family

Around 1568 he married the widow of his brother Charles († 1566), Charlotte de Werchin (1542–1571), daughter of Pierre de Werchin and Helena de Vergy. They had a son:

  • Pierre († 1598)
⚭ 1584 with Marguerite de Croÿ-Arschot (1568–1614), daughter of Philippe III. de Croy
