Henry III. (Nassau)
Henry III. von Nassau (born January 12, 1483 in Siegen , † September 14, 1538 in Breda ) was Count of Nassau and Lord of Breda.
Life
Henry III. was the eldest son of Count Johann V von Nassau-Dillenburg from the House of Nassau , who was governor of Geldern, and Elisabeth of Hesse . While Heinrich inherited the rich Dutch possessions of Nassau from Engelbert II in 1504 , his younger brother Wilhelm the Rich became Count of Nassau-Dillenburg. In the years 1515 to 1521 Heinrich III. Governor of Holland and Zealand in the service of the Habsburgs . He had also contributed to the education of Emperor Charles V , which established the traditionally good relationship between the Nassauers and the Habsburgs until the beginning of the Dutch War of Independence.
Henry III. was an art collector and patron who sponsored Jan Gossaert , Bernard van Orley and Jan van Scorel , among others . Maybe he also has the Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch commissioned. This work of art was temporarily located in his palace in Brussels .
Henry III. married three times:
- 1503 Françoise Louise of Savoy (1485–1511), daughter of Jacob of Savoy
- 1515 Claude Chalon (1498-1521), of this he was the son Renatus (1519-1544), who in 1530 the legacy of Claude's brother Philibert as Prince of Orange took
- 1524 Mencía de Mendoza y Fonseca (1508–1554)
Mencía survived Heinrich and later married Ferdinand of Aragon , Duke of Calabria .
