Philibert de Chalon (March 18, 1502 , † August 3, 1530 ) was Prince of Orange , Duke of Gravina, Count of Tonnerre and Charny and Lord of Arlay and Nozeroy .

Life

The son of Johann IV von Chalon and Philiberta von Luxemburg, he was born in Lons-le-Saunier in what was then the county of Burgundy , in what is now the Jura department in France. A few days after Philibert's birth, his father died and he succeeded him, albeit under the tutelage of his mother. When Philibert came of age, she organized lavish festivities that culminated in a major tournament in Nozeroy .

Subject of the emperor from birth , the lands of Philibert were in the geographical area of ​​interest of the French king. For this reason, he initially behaved neutrally in the flare-up battle between Francis I and Charles V and tried to stay out of the conflict so as not to endanger his territory. With the appointment as Knight of the Golden Fleece by Charles V. However, in 1516 he had no choice but to confess as color. Philibert asked the emperor to keep his appointment as a knight a secret in order not to arouse the anger of the French king, but the latter has already sent a punitive expedition to his principality of Orange, which prompted Philibert to go to the king to offer him his services . However, Francis I received him in a very harsh manner, so that the prince finally sided with the imperial liege lord . On his behalf he took part in the siege of Marseilles under the Duke of Bourbon and was taken hostage by the French in 1524 when the city was liberated by Andrea Doria . He was only released when the Treaty of Madrid was ratified .

Charles V appointed him governor of the Kingdom of Naples and appointed him Duke of Gravina. After the death of the Duke of Bourbon, the imperial troops appointed him generalissimo. In this capacity he negotiated with the Pope and convinced Clement VII de Medici to stand up for the emperor's cause. Nothing would happen to the Pope if he supported Charles's campaign against the Republic of Florence , and the Emperor would approve the appointment of Alessandro de 'Medici , a nephew of the Pope, as Duke of Florence.

The prince fell at the Battle of Gavinana when the imperial troops under his leadership marched against the Florentine army of Francesco Ferrucci .

Philibert was the last male descendant of a branch of the Counts of Burgundy going back to Wilhelm IV of Auxonne, who ruled Orange since the marriage of John IV of Chalon to Maria, the heiress of the principality. Philibert died unmarried and, apart from his illegitimate daughter Jeanne, left no legitimate descendants. His nephew, Renatus von Nassau-Breda , son of his sister Claudia, inherited the property upon Philibert's death, whereby the Principality of Orange came to the von Nassau family, who still hold the title today.
