The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) is a union in Australia for public sector workers . This union was formed on July 1, 1994 through the merger of the Public Sector, Professional, Scientific, Research, Technical, Communication, Aviation and Broadcasting Union (PSU) with the State Public Services Federation (SPSF). The CPSU is one of the largest trade unions in Australia with approximately 160,000 members. The CPSU is divided into two areas, the SPSF Group with 100,000 employees in the state sector, research institutions and universities, and the PSU Group with 60,000 employees in the federal and state governments.

SPSF Group

The State Public Services Federation was registered as a union on July 30, 1976 and was only responsible for a small part of the civil servants and it was only when it changed its status in 1984 that it was able to merge with the Public Service Association of New South Wales , which formed in 1999 Existed 100 years in the New South Wales public service. With the state employees in Victoria , the SPSF Group developed into a nationally active union.

According to their regional structure, the unions within the SPS Group are called:

  • New South Wales : Public Service Association of NSW (PSA of NSW)
  • Queensland : Queensland Public Sector Union (QPSA)
  • South Australia : The Public Service Association of South Australia (PSA)
  • Western Australia : Civil Service Association of Western Australia (CSA)
  • Tasmania : State Public Services Federation Tasmania (SPSF Tasmania)

The SPSF Group also records employees in the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory .

Union members of the CPSU protested in Sydney in 2005 against the government of John Howard of the Liberal Party of Australia

This union is a member of the umbrella organization Australian Council of Trade Unions and was registered on the Australian Industrial Relations Commission . She took an active part in the protests against the liberal-nationalist coalition government of John Howard from 2005 to 2007.

Within the SPSF Group there is the so-called The General Staff Union , which includes union members with high qualifications in state schools, research institutions and universities.
