Battle of Gavinana

The battle of Gavinana was on 3. August 1530 as part of the Italian wars between Florence and Emperor Charles V held. The imperial armed forces under Philibert de Chalon initially came on the defensive in the battle against the outnumbered Florentines under Francesco Ferrucci . The reinforcements brought in by Fabrizio Maramaldo (an Italian in imperial service) turned the tide in favor of the imperial troops. Seriously wounded Ferrucci was killed after the battle of Maramaldo. With this imperial victory, the Medici were able to regain power in Florence. Charles V had promised this to the Medici Pope Clement VII after he had crowned him King of Italy and Emperor in Bologna .
