Francesco Ferrucci (* 1489 in Florence , † August 3, 1530 in San Marcello Pistoiese ) was an Italian military leader .

Life

Ferrucci was born in Florence and held several administrative posts before he took over the mercenary group "Bande Nere" , previously led by Giovanni de 'Medici . In 1529 Ferrucci became Florentine Governor of Empoli , where he was able to recapture Volterra , which had spoken out in favor of Emperor Charles V. When he was advancing towards Pisa to break the siege of Florence, the imperial army stopped him at Pistoia and defeated him at the Battle of Gavinana in August 1530. Ferruccio was killed after the Battle of Fabrizio Maramaldo .

The myth of Francesco Ferrucci was founded by the Italian writers and poets of the 19th century. In 1847 Goffredo Mameli wrote the student fight song " Fratelli d'Italia " , the national anthem of Italy (1946), in which Ferrucci is mentioned.
