The French city of Lons-le-Saunier is the capital of the Jura department with 17,291 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) . It is also the seat of the sub-prefecture of the arrondissement Lons-le-Saunier and the capital of the cantons Lons-le-Saunier-1 and Lons-le-Saunier-2 .
geography
The city is about halfway between Dole in the north and Bourg-en-Bresse in the south. The river Vallière flows through it; however, it runs largely underground to reduce the risk of flooding.
history
Already the Romans used the thermal springs of Lons-le-Saunier. The city was then called Ledo salinarius (salt city).

Attractions
- The city also has one of the oldest crypts in the Jura, the Saint-Désiré church . It dates from the 11th century.
- The city museum houses exhibits on local prehistory , paintings and sculptures .
economy
Lons-le-Saunier is home to the well-known processed cheese “ La vache qui rit ” (The laughing cow). There has also been viticulture in the area since the Middle Ages; the place belongs to the Jura wine-growing region .

Offenburg in Baden-Württemberg is twin town of Lons-le-Saunier.
