Le Frasnois is a commune in the Jura department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Le Frasnois is located at 792  m , about twelve kilometers south of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a plateau between the lakes Lac de la Motte in the south and Lac de Narlay in the north, on the edge of the vast forest heights of the Bois sur le Lac and the Bois de Banc.

The area of the 14.56 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part is taken up by the gently undulating plateau of Le Frasnois, which averages 790  m . On this limestone plateau, in hollows that were sealed by layers of marl and clay from glacial deposits, there are various lakes: Lac du Petit-Maclu , Lac du Grand-Maclu and Lac de la Motte, all of which belong to the Hérisson catchment area, as well as the Lac de Narlay , which is drained underground. To the east of the Lacs de Maclu the slope rises steeply, and on the plateau of the Bois de Ban , the highest point of Le Frasnois is reached at 930  m . To the northeast, the community soil extends to the ridge of the Mont des Ifs ( 889  m ).

In the north, the municipal area extends over the ridge of the Bois sur le Lac and the depression of the Lac du Vernois , which is also drainless above ground, to the plateau of Les Grands Bois and Bois de Banc ( 889  m ). The area also extends to the southwest over extensive forest areas ( Bois de la Signat , 877  m ; Bois de Jeanrau ) as far as the Hérisson valley . This river with its numerous smaller and larger waterfalls, which drains the area to the west to the Ain , forms the southern border. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, Le Frasnois also includes several hamlets, farm groups and individual farms, including:

  • Narlay ( 765  m ) west of Lac de Narlay
  • La Fromagerie ( 770  m ) on the slope north of the Hérisson valley

Neighboring municipalities of Le Frasnois are Saffloz and Châtelneuf in the north, La Chaux-du-Dombief in the east, Bonlieu in the south and Menétrux-en-Joux , Songeson and Chevrotaine in the west.

history

Le Frasnois was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. The place name is derived from the old French word fresnaie (ash grove ). In the 13th century the place was granted certain freedoms. Together with Franche-Comté , Le Frasnois came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1815 when the previously independent La Fromagerie was incorporated into Le Frasnois.

With 160 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Le Frasnois is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had declined markedly in the first half of the 20th century (221 people were still counted in 1881), a continuous increase in population has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Le Frasnois was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle breeding and dairy farming, as well as forestry. Today there are also some small businesses, including handicrafts (pottery, wood carving). Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

As a resort in a popular excursion area in the High Jura, Le Frasnois now also benefits from tourism, especially from summer tourism, when water sports can be practiced on the Lac de la Motte and Lac de Narlay. In the area around Le Frasnois you can take beautiful walks and long hikes.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Ilay (La Chaux-du-Dombief) to Le Pont de la Chaux (on the main road N5). Another road connection is with Chevrotaine.
