The Lac de Narlay is a lake in the French Jura , in the Jura department , around 10 km south of Champagnole in Franche-Comté . It lies at 748  m on the soil of the municipality of Le Frasnois and covers an area of around 0.4 km². The lake is 950 m long and a maximum of 625 m wide. Its greatest depth is 40 m.

geography

The Lac de Narlay is located in a hollow northeast of Le Frasnois, in the region of the five lakes. It is nestled between the forest heights of Sur les Agrailles ( 889  m ) in the north and Mont des Ifs ( 892  m ) in the southeast. The lake has steep bank areas, especially in the southeast, otherwise the banks are relatively flat and partly lined with a narrow swamp belt. Unlike the other lakes in the region, Lac de Narlay is not primarily of glacial origin, but was created as a result of the collapse of a karst cave system.

The Lac de Narlay is fed by some springs on the slopes of the surrounding heights. The drainage takes place underground through several sublacustric infiltration funnels near the west bank. Marking attempts have shown that the water in the Source du Moulin spring at Lac de Chalain emerges again. Thus, the Lac de Narlay belongs to the catchment area of the Lac de Chalain, while the neighboring Lacs de Maclu and Lac d'Ilay are drained to the Hérisson.

tourism

The landscape around Lac de Narlay is under nature protection. Bathing and boating are not allowed. Nevertheless, the lake is occasionally used for swimming in summer and, because of its depth, also for diving. Fishing is permitted with a special permit ( carte de pêche ). The water is particularly clean, so that extremely rare freshwater crabs live in the lake, which are also under nature protection. On the western bank there is a campsite open during the summer months. Hiking and mountain biking are possible around the lake .

Legend

According to an old legend, a village sank in today's lake.

According to an old legend , the village of Frasnois near the shore was in the area of today's lake. On a beautiful Christmas day, an old beggar woman came to the town to ask for alms , but no one wanted to help her except a blind man. However, the beggar was in truth a witch who let it rain on the village until it sank completely in the floods. Only the blind man's house, which was a little outside the town, was spared. The legend ends with the fact that on Christmas days the screaming of a rooster can be heard from the sunken place. The story also tells that mermaids gave the water of the lake the ability to bleach laundry without any further aids .
