The Lac du Vernois [ lak 'dy vɛʀ'noa ] is a lake in the French Jura , in the Jura department , around 10 km south of Champagnole in Franche-Comté . It lies at 738  m on the floor of the municipality of Le Frasnois and covers an area of around 7 hectares . The lake is 500 m long, a maximum of 200 m wide and 32 meters deep. It shows the shape of a triangle.

The Lac du Vernois is isolated in a completely closed basin of the Champagnole plateau west of Le Frasnois, in the region of the five lakes. It is nestled between the forest heights of Sur les Roches ( 849  m ) in the north and La Grand-Roche ( 871  m ) in the south. The southern bank is quite steep and densely forested, while the northern bank areas are lined with willows. During the high stages of the various ice ages , the basin was lined by the Jura glaciers with layers of marl and clay , so that a lake could arise despite the karstified subsoil.

The Lac du Vernois is fed by the water from some springs on the surrounding slopes. It has no above-ground drainage because the water disappears in infiltration funnels at the bottom of the lake. Marking attempts have shown that the water in the Source du Moulin spring at Lac de Chalain emerges again.
