Publy is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Publy is located at 525  m , about eight kilometers southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends in the Jura , in the south of the Plateau Lédonia (first Jura plateau), between the erosion valley of the Creux de Revigny in the west and the heights of the Côte de l'Today in the east.

The area of the 15.18 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the plain of the Plateau Lédonia, which lies at an average of 530  m and consists partly of arable and meadow land, partly of forest ( Bois des Epaisses ). The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In the west, the municipal soil extends to the edge of the Creux de Revigny . To the east, the plateau is bounded by the ridge of the Côte de l'Heute , on which Publy's highest point is reached at 669  m at Château de Beauregard. A small portion of the municipal area is east of the Côte de l'H heute in the valley of the Combe d'Ain .

Publy includes the hamlet of Binans ( 540  m ) in a hollow at the western foot of the Côte de l'Heute and some individual farms. Publy's neighboring communities are Conliège , Vevy and Verges in the north, Blye and Mesnois in the east, Nogna and Poids-de-Fiole in the south and Revigny in the west.

history

The municipality of Publy was already settled in prehistoric times and during the Gallo-Roman times. Publy and Binans are first mentioned in a bull by Pope Anastasius IV in 1153. In the 13th century, Publy was granted certain freedoms. It belonged to Binan's rule in the Middle Ages. During the siege of Lons-le-Saunier, Binans Castle protected the population of Conliège. The castles of Binans and Beauregard were demolished on the orders of King Louis XIV . Together with Franche-Comté , Publy came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. There was a change of area in 1824 when the previously independent Binans was incorporated into Publy.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Nicolas

The current parish church of Saint-Nicolas in Publy was built in the 15th century and expanded in 1593 with the construction of the Sainte-Barbe chapel. The Saint-Renorbert side chapel was added in 1695. The ruins of the former Château de Binans have been preserved: the surrounding wall, the lower part of the Romanesque keep, the foundation walls of the manor house and the Salle des Dames. The large square keep of the Château de Beauregard, which was probably built in the 10th century by the lords of Coligny , is a destination for excursions and offers a beautiful panoramic view of the area.

With 285 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Publy is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (433 people were counted in 1891), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Publy was a predominantly agricultural and forestry village until well into the 20th century. In addition, there are now some local small businesses, including a furniture manufacturing and air conditioning company. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Nogna to Crançot . There are further road connections with Conliège and Verges.
