Doye is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Doye is located at 787  m , about eight kilometers east-northeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on a high plateau between the valley basins of the Val de Sirod in the west and the Val de Mièges in the east, north of the valley basin with the karst spring of the Ain .

The area of the 3.56 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the Doye plateau, which is on average 780  m and consists mainly of meadow and pasture land. At 801  m , the highest point of Doye is reached at the height south of the village. The plateau is flanked on three sides by valleys, which also mark the municipal boundary. In the east is the valley of the Serpentine (drains the Val de Mièges to the Ain), in the south the deeply cut and wooded basin in which the Ain rises, and in the west the valley of the Ruisseau de Combe Sandon (side stream of the Ain).

Neighboring communities of Doye are Mournans-Charbonny and Onglières in the north, Mièges and Nozeroy in the east, Conte in the south and Charency in the west.

history

Doye was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. The place name is derived from the regional patois expression doie (source), which refers to the nearby Ain source. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Nozeroy rule. Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The village church of Doye was built in the 18th century and was redesigned in the 19th century.

With 101 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Doye is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (168 people were still counted in 1881), after a temporary stagnation since the beginning of the 1970s, a continuous population decline was recorded again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Doye was a village dominated by agriculture, especially cattle breeding and dairy farming. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road D471, which runs from Champagnole to Pontarlier . Road connections exist with Charency, Charbonny, Plénisette and Nozeroy.
