Esserval-Tartre is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Esserval-Tartre is located at 841  m , about 13 kilometers northeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the vast plateau that connects to the north of the Val de Mièges, in the headwaters of the Ruisseau du Gouffre de l'Houle.

The area of the municipal area of 12.19 km² covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by a plateau, which averages 840  m . It shows only very small differences in relief and is mainly covered by meadow and pasture land, in the northern part also by forest. The high plateau has no noteworthy surface running waters. In some hollows, which are sealed by layers of marl and clay , raised bogs could develop. To the north, the community area extends over the high plateau into the extensive wooded area of the Forêt de la Joux , in which there are particularly large fir trees and an ice grotto. The highest point of Esserval-Tartre is reached at 904  m on a knoll in the Forêt de la Joux . The north-western boundary of the municipality is marked by the edge of the high plateau. The Ruisseau du Gouffre de l'Houle rises south of Esserval-Tartre and flows south through a basin into the Val de Mièges to the serpentine and thus to the Ain .

Neighboring communities of Esserval-Tartre are Supt and Boujailles in the north, Cuvier and Censeau in the east, Esserval-Combe in the south and Plénise and Chapois in the west.
