Abbey in Gigny

Gigny (also: Gigny-sur-Suran ) is a French municipality with 281 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Lons-le-Saunier and the canton of Saint-Amour .

Gigny is located in the Revermont and the Suran and is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Pimorin in the north, Monnetay in the northeast, Val Suran with Louvenne in the east, Andelot-Morval in the south, Véria in the southwest, Graye-et-Charnay in the west and Loisia in the northwest.

history

In the place is the hook-shaped "Grotte préhistorique de Gigny". The place was created as an offshoot of the Cluny Abbey . The former Romanesque- style abbey church of St-Taurin de Gigny was built in the 11th century, while the Gigny Abbey was built in the late 9th century.
