Bourg-de-Sirod is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is one of the 38 member municipalities of the Communauté de communes Champagnole Porte du Haut-Jura .

geography

Bourg-de-Sirod is located at 584  m , about four kilometers southeast of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a plateau north of the valley of the Ain above the Perte de l'Ain, between the forest heights of the Bois de Sapois in the west and the crest of the Château-Vilain in the east.

The area of the 4.42 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by a depression that extends in a north-south direction, has a width of around 700 m and averages 580  m . This depression is swampy, especially in its northern section ( Étang Marquis ). It is flanked in the west by the Bois des Sapois ( 736  m ), in the east by the heights of Lent (here, at 792  m, the highest point of Bourg-de-Sirod is reached).

South of Bourg-de-Sirod, a step leads to the valley of the Ain around 50 m below. This enters the basin from the east, where it breaks through the narrow ridge of Château-Vilain and Côte Poire with a deep gorge. This is where the Perte de l'Ain is located . The river plunges into a ravine with several waterfalls, disappears for a short time under a rock slab and then reaches the basin at the settlement of Les Forges, where it turns south.

In addition to the actual village, Bourg-de-Sirod also includes several settlements and individual farms, including:

  • Les Forges ( 535  m ) on the Ain, at its exit from the Perte de l'Ain
  • Bourg-Dessus ( 590  m ) at the western foot of the ridge of Château-Vilain

Neighboring municipalities of Bourg-de-Sirod are Sapois and Lent in the north, Sirod in the east, Syam in the south and Champagnole in the west.

history

The village was first mentioned in a document in the 9th century. The community consisted of three settlements in the Middle Ages: Bourg-Dessus, Bourg-Dessous (corresponds to today's Bourg-de-Sirod) and Sirod (today a separate municipality) with the parish church. Around 1186, Château-Vilain Castle was probably built on the site of a fortress that already existed during the Bronze Age and Gallo-Roman Period. The lords of the castle were the lords of Commercy, who also owned the lordship of Mont-Rivel. During the Middle Ages, Château-Vilain was the center of an extensive rule that included the areas of Champagnole, Les Planches-en-Montagne and Val de Sirod. The castle was besieged and captured by the troops of Henry IV in 1595 , and in 1639, after a long period of siege, it was devastated by Swedish troops.

The settlement of Bourg-Dessous was named Richebourg in the 14th century and was fortified at that time. Together with Franche-Comté , Bourg-de-Sirod came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Workshops that were dependent on hydropower set up shop on the Ain very early on. The iron works of Bourg-de-Sirod were founded in 1734. In 1810, the Château-Vilain was finally destroyed and the building material used to restore the ironworks.

With 94 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Bourg-de-Sirod is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (298 people were counted in 1891), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Bourg-de-Sirod was an agricultural village. Economic life has been shaped by the ironworks on the Ain since the 18th century. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares near a departmental road that leads from Champagnole to Sirod. Another road connection exists with Syam.

Attractions

From the medieval castle Château-Vilain ruins (foundation walls of the towers and remains of the surrounding wall) have been preserved. Bourg-de-Sirod does not have its own church, but in the municipality there is the former castle chapel from the 12th century and the chapel of Les Forges from the 19th century. In the hamlet of Bourg-Dessus there is a gate tower built in 1616. The Perte de l'Ain is one of the natural attractions.
