Blye is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Blye is located at 476  m , about 13 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura in the valley of the Combe d'Ain, west of the Ain river at the southern foot of the Grand Mont Lyon.

The area of the 10.76 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The eastern border runs along the Ain, which flows here in a wide flat floodplain from north to south and is dammed east of the village by a weir to generate electricity. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends westward over the Combe d'Ain plain (at an average of 460  m ) to the adjacent, wooded chain of the Côte de l'Heute (up to 580  m ). The isolated elevation of the Bois du Grand Mont Lyon north of the village also belongs to the municipality. This is where Blye's highest point is reached at 590  m .

Neighboring municipalities of Blye are Verges and Châtillon in the north, Charézier in the east, Mesnois in the south and Publy in the west.

history

Various finds from the Bronze Age , which were discovered in 1955 during the construction of the weir on the Ain, prove that the municipality of Blye was settled very early. A tumulus dates from the same period .

Blye was first mentioned in a document as early as 1111. Since the Middle Ages, Blye has been a fortified area, which in 1303 was granted certain freedoms. Together with Franche-Comté , Blye came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Large parts of the village were destroyed by a major fire in 1802.

Attractions

The village church with its Romanesque barrel vault originally dates from the 13th century . The church was restored and redesigned in the 15th century; the bell tower was built in the 18th century.

With 162 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Blye is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (293 people were still counted in 1881), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Blye was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Pont-de-Poitte to Châtillon. Another road connection is with Publy.
