The church forms the center of the village

Marigny is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Marigny is at 510  m , about 18 kilometers east of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The clustered village extends in the Jura , in the valley of the Combe d'Ain, on the eastern edge of the wide Ain valley at the foot of the high plateau of Champagnole, north of the Lac de Chalain .

The area of the 11.99 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The western part of the area is taken up by the wide depression of the Ain, which averages 500  m . The river itself, which forms the western border, is sunk into this plain with a 50 m deep valley. To the south, the community area extends to the shore of Lac de Chalain and also includes the hill west of the lake. It consists of moraine material deposited here by the local glacier during the Ice Age, which also created the lake basin of Lac de Chalain.

To the east of Marigny there is a step of around 80 m high, which leads to the Champagnole plateau. This area is predominantly forest-covered ( Forêt du Chanet and Bois de Marigny ) and is subdivided by the erosion channels of the village stream of Marigny. At 628  m , the highest point in Marigny is reached in the Forêt du Chanet.

The hamlet of Villard-sur-l'Ain ( 520  m ) on the plateau between Ain and Lac de Chalain as well as a few individual farms belong to Marigny . Neighboring communities of Marigny are Montigny-sur-l'Ain and Mont-sur-Monnet in the north, Fontenu in the east, Doucier in the south and Châtillon in the west.

history

The region around Lac de Chalain was already inhabited during the Neolithic , the Bronze Age and the Gallo-Roman period. Marigny was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Marin (i) us and means something like estate of Marin (i) us (Mariniacum). In the Middle Ages, after splitting off from the Salins rule, Marigny formed its own small rule. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1949 when the previously independent Villard-sur-l'Ain was incorporated into Marigny.

Attractions

The village church of Marigny was built in the 18th century. The Saint-Renobert chapel dates from the 15th century. Only a few remains of the former manor house have survived. The Lac de Chalain is one of the natural attractions.

With 207 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Marigny is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 349 people), a slight increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Marigny was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Doucier to Pont-du-Navoy. Another road connection is with Fontenu.
