Chevrotaine is a municipality in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chevrotaine is located at 644  m , about 23 kilometers east of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a depression on the high plateau of Champagnole between the depression of the Combe d'Ain in the west and the chains of the High Jura in the east, near the Lac de Chalain .

The area of the 5.33 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Champagnole plateau, which is an average of 650  m . This slightly undulating plateau shows a loose structure of meadow, farmland and forest. To the east, the municipality extends into extensive forest areas that gradually rise to the heights of Bois Molard du Taureau and Bois de la Signat . The highest elevation of Chevrotaine is reached here at 811  m . The entire area shows no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the subsoil, which consists of porous limestone.

Neighboring communities of Chevrotaine are Saffloz in the north, Le Frasnois in the east, Songeson in the south and Fontenu in the west.

The chapel of Chevrotaine was built in the 17th century.

With 32 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Chevrotaine is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (106 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chevrotaine was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. Road connections exist with Doucier , Fontenu, Saffloz and Le Frasnois.
