Vertamboz is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Vertamboz is located at 490  m , about 17 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in the south of the Champagnole plateau, which connects to the east of the Combe d'Ain depression, north of the Drouvenant valley cut .

The area of ​​the 6.66 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central area is occupied by a plateau that belongs to the depression of the Combe d'Ain and is mainly covered by arable land and meadow. This plateau is bordered in the south by the up to 40 m deep valley cut of the Drouvenant , in the north-west by the valley of its right tributary Sirène . This river system ensures the drainage of the area to the Ain . To the east, the community area extends over an approximately 80 m high step on the Champagnole plateau ( 600  m on average ), which is partly wooded and partly grassland. At 615  m , the highest point in Vertamboz is reached in the Bois de l'Ermitage .

Vertamboz's neighboring municipalities are Charézier in the north, Uxelles in the east, Cogna , Clairvaux-les-Lacs and Boissia in the south and Patornay in the west.

history

Vertamboz was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, the place belonged to the barony of Clairvaux, but was separated from it in 1312 and then formed its own rule. Together with Franche-Comté , Vertamboz came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In the course of the French Revolution , two mansions of Vertamboz were demolished.

Attractions

The village church of Vertamboz was built in the 17th century and remodeled in the 18th century. It has a statue of the Blessed Virgin from the 15th century.

With 94 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Vertamboz is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. Between the end of the 19th century and the end of the 20th century the population decreased slowly but continuously (in 1881 there were still 231 people).

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vertamboz was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the community.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N78, which leads from Lons-le-Saunier to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux . Further road connections exist with Charézier and Uxelles.
