Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the capital of the canton of Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux in the arrondissement of Saint-Claude .

geography

Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux is located at 905  m , nine kilometers northwest of Morez and about 22 km north-northeast of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the vast plateau of Grandvaux, northwest of the forest heights of the Forêt de la Joux Devant on the ascent to the Col de la Savine.

The area of the 17.57 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the Grandvaux plateau (an average of 900  m ). It shows only slight differences in relief and consists mainly of meadow and pasture land. The north-eastern part of this plateau is drained by the source streams of the Lemme to the north to the Saine . On the remaining part of the municipality there are no surface rivers, as the rainwater seeps into the porous calcareous subsoil.

In the southeast, the Grandvaux plateau is flanked by the ridge of the Forêt de la Joux Devant , which geologically forms an anticline of the Jura folds . This impassable area is characterized by parallel ridges and troughs with no drainage above ground in between. At 1,094  m , the highest point in Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux is reached at the Joux Devant. The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

In addition to the actual village, Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux also includes several hamlets, groups of farms and individual farms, including:

  • Salave de Vent ( 906  m ) on the high plateau west of the village
  • Salave de Bise ( 895  m ) on the high plateau west of the village
  • Les Poncets ( 897  m ) on the plateau west of the village
  • La Savine ( 877  m ) in the headwaters of the Lemme on the ascent to Col de la Savine

Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux are La Chaumusse and Fort-du-Plasne in the north, Lac-des-Rouges-Truites in the east, Morbier and Grande-Rivière Château in the south and Saint-Pierre in the west.

history

Saint-Laurent forms the center of the Grandvaux plateau, which has been cleared since the 6th century. Since the 13th century, the village belonged to the territory of the Abbey of Saint-Claude. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. To avoid confusion with other municipalities of the same name, the place was officially renamed from Saint-Laurent to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux in 1962.

Attractions

The current parish church was built in the 18th century and has an octagonal choir. There are two former windmills, one of which has been converted into a chapel.

After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range of around 1000 people, a significant increase in population was recorded from 1955 to 1985. Since then, the population has remained at a constant level.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. In the 20th century, two companies in the toy and eyewear industries shaped the economic life of Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux. Their closure hit the village hard. Today there are various small business and retail businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

As a resort in a popular excursion area in the High Jura, Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux now also benefits from tourism, especially from winter tourism when cross-country skiing can be practiced on the high plateau.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic and forms a road junction. It is located on the main road N5, which leads from Geneva via Morez to Dole . Other national and regional road connections exist with Lons-le-Saunier , Saint-Claude and Mouthe . Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux has a train station on the railway line from Champagnole to Morez, which opened in 1900 .
