Les Bouchoux is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Lupicin in the arrondissement of Saint-Claude .
geography
Les Bouchoux is located at 950 m , about ten kilometers south-southwest of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on a ledge on the eastern slope of the Tacon valley, at the foot of the Croix des Couloirs.
The area of the 21.20 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part is taken up by the deeply carved erosion valley of the Tacon , which rises in the very south of the community area, flows north and feeds its water to the Bienne . The valley, which is a maximum of 1.5 km wide at its upper edge, is sunk like a canyon into the high plateaus of the Hautes-Combes and is 400 m deep on the northern municipal boundary. The upper valley slopes are very steep and are criss-crossed by ledges (resistant limestone layer).
In the east, the parish soil extends to the upper edge of the Tacon Valley ( Les Couloirs ). In the area of the Croix des Couloirs, Les Bouchoux's highest point is reached at 1230 m . The western part of the municipality extends over the extensive, partly wooded ( Bois des Ecollets , Bois de Banc ), partly pastureland high plateau of the Hautes-Combes, which is here at an average of 1000 m . The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
In addition to the actual village, Les Bouchoux also includes numerous hamlets and farm groups, including:
- Très-la-Ville ( 980 m ) on the eastern slope of the Tacon valley
- La Serra ( 1010 m ) on the western slope of the Tacon valley
- Tailla ( 900 m ) in a trough-like depression on the plateau west of the Tacon
- Désertin ( 995 m ) on the plateau west of the Bois de Banc
Neighboring communities of Les Bouchoux are Coiserette in the north, La Pesse in the east, Belleydoux in the south and Viry , Choux and Vulvoz in the west.
history
Various finds indicate that the municipality of Les Bouchoux was already populated during Roman times. In the 12th century, the Cutture priory was founded, dependent on the Saint-Claude monastery. It was converted into a commander in the 16th century and destroyed by French troops in 1639. Together with Franche-Comté , Les Bouchoux came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1832, when La Pesse was separated from Les Bouchoux and made an independent municipality.
Attractions
The village church, at the far end of the Les Bouchoux ledge, was built in the 19th century. Below the village is the chapel of the former priory.

With 317 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Les Bouchoux is one of the small communities in the Jura department. Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Les Bouchoux was a village dominated by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village.
The area around Les Bouchoux is a popular recreational and excursion area in the High Jura. In winter the village also benefits from tourism when cross-country skiing can be practiced on the Hautes-Combes plateau.
The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Saint-Claude to Saint-Germain-de-Joux . Further road connections exist with Viry, La Pesse and Les Moussières .
