La Rixouse is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
La Rixouse is located at 732 m , about nine kilometers north of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a panoramic position on a terrace on the sunny slope around 260 m above the deeply cut river of the Bienne , on the southern slope of the Bois de Ban.
The area of the 12.59 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The southern border runs along the Bienne, which flows here in an erosion valley parallel to the Jura chains to the southwest. From the course of the river, the community area stretches northward over a wooded slope, partly crossed by rock bands, onto the terrace of La Rixouse. This is followed in the north by the ridge of the Bois de Ban and the Bois de la Joux ( 962 m ).
The landscape in the northern part of the municipality shows only slight differences in relief and is characterized by parallel ridges and depressions, which are oriented towards the southwest-northeast in accordance with the direction of the fold of the Jura in this area. From a structural geological point of view, they represent a series of anticlines and synclines , which mainly consist of rock layers from the Upper Jurassic period . To the north of the Bois du Ban follow the boggy basin of Les Prés , a long knoll and the basin of the brook Loutre , which seeps into a bog here. The north-western boundary forms the ridge of the Bois de la Joux Devant , on which the highest point of La Rixouse is reached at 996 m . The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
La Rixouse includes the hamlet of Les Prés de la Rixouse ( 880 m ) on the plateau north of the Bois de Ban as well as various individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of La Rixouse are Nanchez with Chaux-des-Prés in the north, Villard-sur-Bienne and Longchaumois in the east, Saint-Claude in the south and Leschères in the west.
history
La Rixouse was probably founded in the 5th century by the monks of the Saint-Lupicin monastery. The village developed into the center of a large parish during the Middle Ages. It belonged to the domain of the Abbey of Saint-Claude. Together with Franche-Comté , La Rixouse came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The current village church was built in the 17th century, including the late Gothic bell tower of the previous building, which was built in the 16th century .
