geography

Chaux-des-Prés is located at 875  m , about 14 kilometers north of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The street-lined village extends in the Jura , on the high plateau of Grandvaux, between the forest heights of the Bois de la Joux Derrière in the west and the Bois de la Joux Devant in the east.

The area of the former municipality covered a section of the French Jura. The landscape is characterized by ridges and longitudinal hollows, which are oriented towards the southwest-northeast in accordance with the direction of the fold of the Jura in this area. The central part of the area is taken up by the high plateau of Grandvaux (an average of 880  m ), which narrows visibly towards the south-west. It shows only slight differences in relief and consists mainly of meadow and pasture land. The area has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the porous calcareous subsoil. Bog areas could develop in some hollows. The karst features , such as cart fields and sinkholes, are characteristic of the plateau .

The plateau of Grandvaux is flanked in the southeast by the narrow ridge of the Bois de la Joux Devant , on which the highest point of Chaux-des-Prés is reached at 1003  m . The western boundary is the ridge of the Bois de la Joux Derrière (up to 985  m ). The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

Neighboring towns of Chaux-des-Prés are Grande-Rivière in the north, Château-des-Prés and Villard-sur-Bienne in the east, La Rixouse and Leschères in the south and Les Piards and Prénovel in the west.
