geography

Villard-sur-Bienne is located at 722  m , about 10 km north-northeast of the city of Saint-Claude (beeline). The village extends in the Jura , in a panoramic position on a terrace on the sunny slope around 230 m above the deeply cut river of the Bienne , on the southern slope of the Bois du Cernois.

The area of the former municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The southern border runs along the Bienne, which flows here in an erosion valley parallel to the Jura chains to the southwest. From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over a wooded slope, partly criss-crossed by rock bands, onto the terrace of Villard. This is followed in the north by the Bois du Cernois ridge , on which the highest point of Villard-sur-Bienne is reached at 966  m .

The landscape in the north-western part shows only slight differences in relief and is characterized by parallel ridges and depressions, which are oriented towards the southwest-northeast according to the direction of the fold of the Jura in this area. From a structural geological point of view, they represent a series of anticlines and synclines , which mainly consist of rock layers from the Upper Jurassic period . The Bois du Cernois is followed by the boggy basin of the Combe de Laume , the height of Les Crozats ( 930  m ) and the basin of the brook Loutre . The north-western boundary is the ridge of the Bois de la Joux Devant ( 960  m ). The former municipality is part of the Regional Nature Park Haut-Jura (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

Villard-sur-Bienne includes the hamlet of Les Crozats ( 901  m ) on the plateau on the edge of the Combe de Laume as well as various individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Villard-sur-Bienne are Nanchez and Grande-Rivière Château with Château-des-Prés in the north, Hauts de Bienne with Lézat in the east, Longchaumois in the south and La Rixouse in the west.

history

Since the Middle Ages, Villard-sur-Bienne and the neighboring village of La Rixouse formed a parish. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Until 1801 the municipality was called Les Villars , then Villard-la-Rixouse , and in 1904 the place was officially renamed Villard-sur-Bienne .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Villard-sur-Bienne was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Some employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares, near the D437 departmental road that leads from Saint-Claude to Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux . Another road connection exists with Morbier .
