The Nausta is a Norwegian river that runs through the Naustdal in the municipality of Sunnfjord . It begins in Fimland and flows under the Kletten into the Førdefjord ten kilometers northwest of Førde . The Nausta is one of Norway 's rivers richest in small salmon .

history

Since the river was very rich in salmon in the 19th century, a so-called salmon tax was levied from around 1840 to 1900, which allowed fishing. During this time, two cold stores were built that delivered to Bergen . Sport fishing on the Nausta began in 1892 when an Englishman bought a fishing license. In 1897 a salmon staircase was built at Naustdalsfossen. With the construction of another salmon staircase in 1974, the salmon-carrying stretch of the river was extended from 4 to 12 kilometers.

natural reserve

In November 2004 the Nausta River was proposed by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research ( NINA ) in a report on the protection of wild salmon on behalf of the Hunters and Fishermen Association of Sogn og Fjordane . The Nausta was placed under nature protection by the Storting on February 18, 2005 , with parts of the Senterpartiet against it and the Venstre for it.
