Vestland is a Norwegian province ( Fylke ) that was created on January 1, 2020 from the merger of the provinces of Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane without the municipality of Hornindal . The basis was a resolution passed by Storting on June 8, 2017, which provided for a reduction to eleven areas as part of a regional reform . The seat of the Fylkeskommune is Bergen , the seat of the Fylkesmann Hermansverk . There are 65 MPs in the provincial parliament ( Fylkesting ). The administrative language is Nynorsk .

geography

Vestland borders in the north on Møre og Romsdal , in the east on Innlandet and Viken , in the southeast on Vestfold og Telemark and in the south on Rogaland . The province is the central area of the country part Vestlandet .

Vestland's coast is heavily indented by fjords. The largest are the Sognefjord , the Hardangerfjord and the Nordfjord . The Scandinavian Mountains shape the entire province, especially with Jotunheimen and the Hardangervidda . The highest mountain is Store Skagastølstind with 2405  moh. With the Jostedalsbreen , Folgefonna and the Hardangerjøkul there are large mainland glaciers in Vestland.

The European route 39 runs along the coast , the most important west-east road connection is the European route 16 from Bergen to Oslo , which runs parallel to the Bergensbanen for long stretches . The Flåmsbana is important for tourism . The most important airport is Bergen Airport , the next larger is Florø Airport .

politics

The first election for the newly created province took place on September 9, 2019. 494,675 people were eligible to vote.
