The Nordfjord is a 116 km long fjord in the north of the Norwegian province ( Fylke ) Vestland , about 10 km south of the 62nd parallel and the ninth longest fjord in Norway. At its deepest point in Ervika near Kjølsdalen , it is up to 585 m deep.

landscape

On the north side of the Nordfjord, the landscape has the character of a low mountain range with heights of around 1,000 m, sometimes up to 1,400 m. Many of the 1,500 m high peaks are glaciated on its south side. Jotunheimen , Norway's highest mountain range with the Jostedalsbreen, rises to the east and south-east of its inland end . A few kilometers north of the Nordfjord lies the Hornindalsvatnet , the deepest inland lake in Europe.

The Nordfjord and its surroundings

The Nordfjord extends in an east-southeast direction and is less branched than, for example, the Sognefjord . However, some sections of the fjord have their own names, mostly named after larger towns or bays. Sections of the fjord are the Isefjord , Hundvikfjord , Innvikfjord and Faleidsfjord . In the middle part, four fjord arms branch off, the Eidsfjord on the north side of the fjord and the Ålfoten , Hyefjord and Gloppenfjord on its south side. The mouth into the open sea is divided into several fjord arms by the Bremangerlandet and several smaller islands. The Vågsfjord and the Fåfjord , north and south of the island Husevågøy, and the Ulvesund , which leads from the Vågsfjord between the island Vågsøya and the mainland to the northeast into the bay Sildegap , are the three northern approaches to the Nordfjord. From the south, the Frøysjøen runs past Bremangerlandet and meets the Fåfjord at the Hornelen cliff , at 860 meters the highest sea cliff in Europe.

traffic

There are no railway or road bridges over the fjord. However, there are several regular ferry connections.

places

The most important places on the Nordfjord today are Stryn on the Innvikfjord , Nordfjordeid on the Eidsfjord (Eid means land bridge and the name Eidsfjord exists several times), Måløy on the island of Vågsøy on the north side of the estuary and Sandane on the Gloppenfjord .
