Jotunheimen is the highest mountain range in Norway and Scandinavia . The name translated means "home of the giants". It was coined in 1862 by the poet Aasmund Olavsson Vinje , inspired by Nordic mythology (see also Jötunheim ) and the wild landscape of the area.

Jotunheimen is the highest part of the Scandes , between the Sognefjord in the west and Valdres in the East and thus into the Fylken Vestland and Innlandet . The area covers a total of around 3500 km².

landscape

The landscape is strongly influenced by the Ice Age with rugged peaks, glaciers , moraines and many trough valleys . With the 2469 m high Galdhøpiggen and the 2464 m (with glacier hood) or 2452 m (without) Glittertind , Norway's two highest peaks are located in these mountains.

In total, over 250 peaks are higher than 1900 m and 20 of them are even higher than 2300 m. In the Hurrungane group , a mountain range in the southwestern area of Jotunheimen, you will find some of Norway's wildest peaks, such as Store Skagastølstind , which are very popular with climbers. To the west of Jotunheimen lies the largest mainland glacier in Europe, the Jostedalsbreen .

Moore and Fjellheide are home to a unique flora. The tree line is at 1100 meters the highest in northern Europe .

tourism

The tourist development of the area began in the 19th century. In 1820, the Norwegian geologist Balthazar Mathias Keilhau undertook one of the first extensive tours into the previously largely unexplored area. The Jotunheimen National Park of the same name is also located in the popular hiking and skiing area, which is well developed through numerous paths and huts . The 1140 km² national park was established in 1980 and encompasses the heart of the mountains. Efforts for this go back to 1928, when the DNT and the Norwegian Nature Conservation Society first officially proposed the facility. In addition, since 1980 there have been another 300 km² in the Utladalen landscape protection area.

One of the most famous and most heavily used hiking trails in Norway with up to 30,000 visitors per year is the Besseggen ridge. It leads above the Gjendesees from Gjendesheim to the Memurubu hut. The most spectacular section leads over a narrow rock ridge between the Gjendesee and the Bessvatnet.

The DNT operates in Jotunheimen the huts Gjendesheim , Gjendebu , Glitterheim , Fondsbu , Skogadalsbøen and Fannaråkhytta which m with 2,068 highest mountain hut in Norway. There are also several self-service huts ( Olavsbu , Yksendalsbu and Tomashelleren ).

The area around the Olavsbu Hut, which is located on the northwestern foothills of the Rauddalseggimassiv, is one of the picturesque, but lonely regions.

The Sognefjellsveien is the highest pass road in Northern Europe and as part of the Rv 55 connects the two Norwegian towns of Gaupne and Lom . Another road is the Rv 51 from Gol to Vågå through Valdres . In addition to scenic attractions, the area also offers some cultural attractions. These include the Lom Stave Church , the Norwegian Mountain Museum and the Jotunheimen Gallery. They should impart knowledge about local tradition and culture.
