National parks in Norway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Norway has designated 47 national parks, 40 of them on the mainland (with offshore islands) and seven on Svalbard (Spitzbergen). Norway's first national park, Rondane , was inaugurated in 1962. Further national parks with a protected area of around 66,600 km² were created by 2012. The total area of the national parks on the mainland is 31,057 km², which is 7% of the total area of mainland Norway. The total area of the national parks on Spitsbergen is 34,345 km², the land area of which is 14,487 km², and thus 24% of the total area of Spitsbergen.

National parks are protected areas of medium protection level in Norway . Only nature reserves are more strictly protected, but national parks usually cover a larger area. The management of the national parks of Norway is carried out by the Miljødirektoratet ( Directoratet for naturforvaltning until July 1, 2013 ).

Norwegian National Park Plan

In 1993, the Storting adopted a new national park plan which, in addition to the already existing 18 national parks, provided for around 23,000 km² of protected areas (national parks and other larger protected areas). As early as 1991, the Jostedalsbreen National Park was designated on the basis of this plan . Other national parks followed only ten years later with the opening of Forollhogna National Park in 2001 and 15 more by 2009. The plan originally envisaged the establishment of six more national parks, two of which have already been opened with the Sjunkhatten and Rohkunborri National Park and the rest The planning and consultation process has started four.

In accordance with the Nature Conservation Act of 1970, the national park plan provides for the designation of three different protected areas:

  • National parks: Large, relatively unspoiled landscapes. The purpose is the preservation of the valuable nature and the preservation of opportunities for leisure activities and recreation.
  • Landscape protection areas: Unique or beautiful natural or cultural landscapes.
  • Nature reserves: Small, unspoiled areas that represent a special habitat and are of scientific or educational interest.

The Nature Conservation Act and the National Park Plan do not apply to Svalbard. The establishment of national parks on the archipelago is regulated by the Svalbard Environmental Protection Act. In 1998 the landscape protection on Svalbard was re-evaluated. As a result, eight new protected areas were designated between 2001 and 2005.
