The Øvre Pasvik National Park ( Norwegian : nasjonalpark Øvre Pasvik , Sami : Báhčaveaji álbmotmeahcci ) is a Norwegian national park in the municipality Sør-Varanger , in the province of Troms og Finnmark . It was founded in 1970 and expanded in 2003 and today covers a protected area of 119 km². It is also located in the border triangle Norway- Finland - Russia and has the function of “preserving and protecting the large, largely untouched coniferous forest area with its unmistakable and varied biodiversity and cultural heritage”.

The national park borders the Øvre-Pasvik nature reserve , Pasvik nature reserve and Gjøkvassneset nature reserve . On the Finnish side it borders on the Vätsäri wilderness area in Inari and on the Russian side on the Pasvik Zapovednik in Petschenga . There is a joint research and tourism project under the name Pasvik-Enare , in which the national park, the Vätsäri wilderness area and the Pasvik Zapovednik are involved.

Geography and landscape

The national park forms a branch of the Siberian taiga . The landscape is characterized by wetlands and sparse pine forests, interspersed with numerous lakes and two rivers. About a quarter of the area is water.

The soils are mostly poor in nutrients, which is partly due to the predominant type of rock gneiss . The climate is continental, with little rain and cold, dry winters.

Flora and fauna

Half of the national park is covered with pine forest. Birch trees are only found occasionally under the pines. In the eastern part of the park on the banks of the Ødevatn there is a single spruce . The pine forest along the Finnish and Russian borders is one of the largest pristine forests in Norway. Some Taiga-typical plant species, which are not or only rarely found in Norway, are native here. These include the swamp porst , the Lapland buttercup , the Siberian cottongrass , the blueberry willow and the Carex laxa sedge . A total of 190 different flowering plant species were counted.

The fauna also includes numerous species, mostly native to the east, including birds such as the bad luck jay , the dwarf hawk , the waxwing and the hooked bullfinch . The largest mammals in the park are the brown bear , which also has the greatest density in Norway, wolverine and raccoon dog . Rare rodents such as the Lapland shrew and the forest lemming also live in the park.

heritage Site

The oldest settlement remains in the national park date from the Stone Age. Between the 6th and 19th centuries there were Sami settlements in the area of what is now the park , but these were dissolved when the Sami were driven out by Norwegian agricultural and forestry workers. Several animal graves were also found in Øvre-Pasvik.

Tourism and administration

The Norwegian government allows the Sami to continue reindeer herding and nomadic life in the park.

Although there are hardly any paved paths in Øvre-Pasvik, it is relatively suitable for hiking. The fish-rich waters are also popular fishing spots.
